Description
The ultimate comfort food combining gooey cheese, tender pasta, and Southern hospitality, perfect for family gatherings and cozy nights.
Ingredients
- 8 oz elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it starts to bubble.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency.
- Add the mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheese until fully melted and incorporated.
- Combine the cheese sauce with the cooked macaroni. If using, sprinkle the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese on top for an added crunch.
- Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes or until it’s golden and bubbly.
- Let it cool slightly before serving so the flavors can settle.
Notes
For an even creamier sauce, consider adding a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese. Don’t overcook the pasta; it should be slightly underdone.
